Venus Retrograde 2023
July 22 to September 3

Venus rules two things we are most interested in – love and money.

Venus has to do with all relationships, sociability and the ideals of love, beauty, and sensuality.  Venus also has to do with money, possessions, and creature comforts.  It represents the principle of attraction, whether we are attracting love or money.

Venus conveys the ability to share and get along with others.  The sign that it falls in your birth chart and the planetary aspects to it show the ways in which you do this.

Venus enters Leo (the sign ruled by the Sun) on June 5, 2023 and remains there until October 8, 2023.  Venus in Leo represents loyalty, generosity, and steadfastness.  What’s wanted in return is appreciation.  Difficulties arise if there is an apparent lack of this much needed appreciation.  Pride can get in the way of expressing feelings and needs.

Retrograde is the apparent backward motion of a planet as observed from the earth.  Venus doesn’t actually move backwards, but it appears to due to the differences in the planets’ orbit around the Sun.  Retrograde timeframes are ones for re-evaluating the areas of life associated with the Retrograding planet and the sign it falls in.  So, Venus Retrograde symbolizes reviewing the areas of love, sociability, and money.  Leo is a sign that also has to do with love, as well as self-expression.  There is a love of the limelight, and appreciation means everything.

The Retrograde motion is from July 23 to September 3.  It follows the conjunction of Venus to the Sun on October 22, 2022 at 29 degrees of Venus ruled Libra, also signifying relationships. This degree is opposite the degree of the April 20, 2023 eclipse at 29 Aries.  This combination and its degrees denote endings, followed by beginnings.

The first aspect that Venus makes upon its entrance into Leo is an opposition to Pluto at 0 Aquarius on June 5, followed by a square to Jupiter at 5 Taurus on June 11.  These early aspects reinforce the idea of endings and beginnings of the eclipse point, as well as the possibility of disappointed expectations in love and finances.

The Retrograde motion begins on July 22 at 28 degrees of Leo trine the North Node in Aries, which would normally suggest a positive beginning, but the yod formation with Neptune and Pluto hints of trouble to come as does the Mars’ opposition to Saturn.  Conflicts over beliefs due to pride and the unwillingness to admit fault suggest further turmoil.

On August 9 Venus forms a square to Uranus once again before conjoining the Sun at 20 degrees of Leo on August 13.  You may ask yourself if you’re being true to yourself in relationships.  And if not, what needs to change.

To add confusion, Mars opposes Neptune on August 22 so searching for a romantic ideal takes center stage.  Where is the knight on the white horse – or the beautiful maiden – to save the day?

Venus comes to a standstill once again on September 3 at 12 degrees of Leo.  Its first aspect is the square to Venus in Taurus at 15 degrees on September 17.  This is the third square of Venus to Jupiter since June 11.  Venus and Jupiter are both considered benefics, so on one hand a good time may be had by all, but certainly indulgence is on the table.  This Venus affects you most if you have planets between 12 and 28 degrees of Leo, Taurus, Scorpio, or Aquarius or 12 and 28 degrees of Aries and Sagittarius.

On the positive side, since Retrograde implies going backwards, it’s a favorable time to get in touch old friends or possibly feeling nostalgic, past lovers.  It’s time to consider your values—pride, security, material comforts, loyalty, status.  When is there too much of a “good thing” or perhaps not enough of one.  Maybe you deserve more than you’ve been allowing yourself and you’ve needed time to truly contemplate your self-worth.
